“You know what is shitty, people going through the same thing at about the same time and not knowing who to talk to about it.
I was scared shitless at the time.”
There’s a horribly cheesy Mormon song that goes,
“You’re not alone. Say it one more time, I’m not alone.”
Thankfully, that’s about all I remember.
But I was thinking about how in Mormonism, we really did feel alone.
The church has this uncanny way of making you feel like you are the only one with your problems; everyone else is doing just fine. Just not you.
But that’s not true. Most LDS families appear to be doing just grand, though most are not.
And that’s what Mormonism is good at:
appearances. Remember that we were told people were watching us,
so we had to be good examples,
a shining light that could not be hidden under a bushel.
So we put on a good face, like everyone else, and we pretended we didn’t have problems...
But we did have problems.
We felt guilty because everyone else was doing so well.
A couple of years ago, our stake president in Texas got up in stake priesthood meeting and said, “I had prepared a talk, but I feel impressed that one or more of you is struggling with pornography and masturbation.”
My friend leaned over and said, “Yeah, half the audience.”
It’s no secret that an awful lot of Mormon men look at porn, and even more masturbate.
But I will bet money that at least one person (probably many) in that audience sat there, thinking, He’s talking to me! He knows!
On Friday, I discovered that a friend from Texas had, like me, figured out the truth behind Mormonism and had left the church.
We had sat in the same chapel thinking we were the only ones having this particular crisis.
He wrote to me, “You know what is shitty, people going through the same thing at about the same time and not knowing who to talk to about it. I was scared shitless at the time.”
So was I. I had no one to talk to; I was sure I was the only one who was dealing with this, and I was terribly alone.
But, no, I’m not alone.
And neither is my friend.
A believing friend in the same ward in Texas tells me he knows of at least half a dozen closet unbelievers in the ward.
And they probably think they’re alone. They’re not.
